The older I get, the more I like Wagner
It's true. I used to get really bored sitting there for five hours, and thought that "Wagner was good, but in small doses". But more and more I find that those five hours just zip by! Last night's Lyric production of Tristan und Isolde is a case in point. It was glorious. Deborah Voight was an amazing Isolde. Frankly, anyone who can get through that role is amazing, just considering the needed stamina. Even though she gets a bit of a break during Act III, she's still been at it all night by the time she gets to the Liebestod, and you know everyone has been waiting for that. I admit to nodding a bit in the last act, but that's because of the glass of wine I shouldn't have had during the second intermission.
