What an exciting adventure for Marissa. If she had an LJ, I bet she would be writing about it there. :)
Years ago, when Alex was still a kitten, I came home and I couldn't find him. He didn't seem to be anywhere in the house, so I went outside with a flashlight and some food. He wasn't there either.
I went back in the house and I was just standing in the entry, trying to figure out what to do next. Then I saw a motion out of the corner of my eye. It was a little paw poking under the door to the cellar.
I was so mad because that meant that the landlord had come in without telling me while I was at work. There was no other way he could have gotten down there. Alex got even for me though. He peed in the dirt part of the cellar floor and he hadn't been neutered yet. There's nothing quite like stinky boy-kitty pee. When I moved out, the landlord was complaining about the smell in the basement and I couldn't do anything but shrug.
