Nice surprises

I came home from the theatre (Cherry Orchard at Steppenwolf) to find two lovely surprises. One was a wild catch from a book I released six months ago: Do-It-Yourself Piston Polishing (for Non-Mechanics), with a very nice journal entry and a new member!

The second was an unexpected book. You might remember that I wrote about hearing Tony Kushner speak last week. I don't think I mentioned that I had also volunteered to help at the event (basically just telling people where to go - something I'm good at, ha, ha). The group that sponsored the talk sent me an autographed copy of A Bright Room Called Day. What a thrill! The funny thing is that I was telling my friends at dinner how brilliant and delightful Kushner is!

(Cherry Orchard: The play is, of course, marvelous. The acting was up to the usual Steppenwolf standards, and Guy Adkins was in it (I'm a huge fan). Also Amy Morton, Yasen Peyankov and various other Ensemble members. However, the play was done in the Upstairs theatre, with the audience on three sides, very close to the "stage", and the blocking was done in such a way as to create some pretty bad sight lines. And the acoustics aren't great up there. I think it would have worked better in the Downstairs theatre. But all in all, it was good.

Sounds like a great evening

There's something about getting a surprise catch that considerably brightens my day.
The theater always works too, I just don't get to go often. It's something to look forward to in post-grad school land ;-)
