mojosmom: (My House)
[personal profile] mojosmom
The drive home yesterday was horrendous (rain + a Bon Jovi concert at Soldier Field combined to create a real mess, not to mention the usual road construction). So by the time I got to the city I was a) in no mood and b) too late to go to Casa Italiana's social hour. Instead, I went home and fixed a nice meal of veggies (roasted red peppers, golden beets and green beans) and salad, with a glass of pinot grigio.

Today I slept later than I had planned, but, hey, it's Saturday, so what the hell. It was an absolutely beautiful day (and we deserve it after the hot spell followed by rain). I decided that I would walk to the bank, then loop around to the produce store and walk back via Hollywood Video and the shoe repair place. I did indeed go to the bank.

But, you see, when you walk around my neighborhood there is lots to see and do. On my way towards the produce store, I passed the shopping center, which was having a health fair/sidewalk sale. I browsed the shoe store items, but nothing intrigued me. I did find a book (like you're surprised by that), Practical Chocolate, which seems to me to be an oxymoron. After all, isn't the point of chocolate that it's not "practical"? But it does contain quite a few yummy recipes, accompanied by lovely pictures.

I got up to 53rd and was strolling down the street, when the lure of Hyde Park Records drew me in for a browse. I picked up Kurt Elling's The Messenger and Cecilia Bartoli's An Italian Songbook, but the real prize was an LP, Meeting at the Summit, Benny Goodman playing with Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Morton Gould, and Igor Stravinsky. (Not all at the same time, though!)

Leaving HPR, I wended my way towards Hyde Park Produce, but was again distracted by signs informing me that Augustana Lutheran Church was having its summer rummage sale. Since it was just a couple of blocks out of my way, I wandered over, and found a nice woven leather bag from J.Crew, a stretchy silky pleated black sleeveless top, and a small green & white pottery bowl.

Then I did go to produce store. They also have wonderful frozen pastas; I picked up some gnocchi stuffed with ricotta, and vegetarian rotolo. On my way back home, I noticed that there was an arts & crafts fair at Harper Court (they're doing this one weekend a month this summer), and of course I had to check it out. I came home with a very nice silver necklace, similar to this but with a circle not a heart.

I made it to Hollywood Video (Disc 3 of the final season of Queer as Folk, and Fassbinder's Querelle because I'm reading Edmund White's bio of Genet) and the shoe repair place (they were actually repairing a purse).

Home once more, I puttered around, did some reading, cleaned some paperwork off my desk, and now I'm going to go have dinner.
