A beautiful day in the neighborhood

mojosmomSaturday was just lovely. We were supposed to get "scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon", but they never materialized. Which was good, because I had outdoor plans. I did a variety of typical Saturday morning errands (bank, shoe repair, vet - Lilith's annual check-up, nothing to worry about), and in the afternoon went to the annual Arts and Crafts fair at the DuSable Museum of African-American History. As is usual with such events, there was a fair bit of schlock, as well as some good stuff. There was also music, demonstrations of athletic prowess, and food (I had some jerk chicken and veggie rice for lunch - yum!).
I also went inside the Museum. They have a wonderful exhibition going on, In The Hands of African American Collectors: The Personal Treasures of Bernard & Shirley Kinsey. Rather than focusing on one particular area, the Kinseys collected widely of the works of African-American artists as well as in African-American history. Mr. Kinsey's uncle was a friend of Zora Neale Hurston's, and there were some letters of hers on display relating to her divorce from Albert Price. That was one pissed-off lady!
On the way home, I decided to stop and go pick up a couple of pieces of jewelry that were being restrung, and remembered that there was a sidewalk sale at the Hyde Park Shopping Center. So I stopped, picked up a copy of the Maurice Sendak/Matthew Rinehart pop-up book, Mommy? from the Toys, Etcetera table, and watched some kids with hula hoops. Then I continued on, stopping in at a local consignment boutique and coming out with a very nice red linen jacket for $10 (!) I walked past the shoe repair place where I'd left my shoe in morning. Their door was open and, as I waved at the lady, she called out, "your shoe's ready!" Since I'd said I'd pick it up Tuesday, that was an unexpected surprise.
Home again, home again, jiggety-jig, and I showered, took a short nap, and then observed Bastille Day with a glass of French wine with dinner and the ritual viewing of Casablanca.
