Oct. 21st, 2004 07:35 pmI went to the Newberry for the Newberry Consort CD release party for donors. Very, very nice! The invite said "cheese and wine" and music. Well! Many kinds of cheese, and wine and veggies (roasted and raw) and bagels and lox and chocolate-dipped strawberries. Three of the four Consort members were there and played and chatted, AND we got to look at gorgeous music books from the Newberry collection! Manuscripts and printed books, including the famous harp of melody (there's a not very good image of it on this page, but you'll get the idea). And they gave us all copies of the CD, too. I ran into Jim (who's on their Board) and gave him a lift home.
Naturally, I had gotten to the Library early so I could stop by the Bookstore (my excuse, if I need one, is that I had to get some birthday presents, which I did). Of course, the sale rack beckoned so I came home with a few books as well. I found a fabulous set of playing cards for Julie (a poker player), a reproduction of an Italian set from around 1850. Here's what they look like. If they'd had two, I'd have bought one for myself, but they didn't. They did have a copy of Robert Sabuda's newest book, but I have an autographed copy on order, so I just looked at it to see what I have to look forward to, and oohed and aaahed.
Missed the debate (Obama vs. Keyes) because it was happening at the same time as the party, but I'm sure I'll catch the highlights (or lowlights) on the news.
