May. 14th, 2006 03:17 amI was at a concert tonight featuring Alfonso X's Cantigas de Santa María. One, referred to in the program notes, but not performed, is about the Virgin Mary saving the king's ferret. I found a summary of it:
The King had a pet ferret, which he loved dearly. The beast was quick and clever. It hunted birds and did many other tricks, which delighted the king.
He was so taken with the animal that he made a beautiful little cage in which to keep it and to protect it from cats.
One day, when the King was riding down the road, he took the ferret from the cage. As he was doing this, the nimble beast fell under the horses’ hooves.
The King cried out to the Virgin, begging her to save his little pet.
Everyone there was upset because the king’s horse had stepped firmly on the ferret. The King, pleaded with them to find it and give it back to him.
Then suddenly, the merciful Virgin caused the ferret to come out from under the horse’s hoof. May she be blessed and praised and may she and her son give us mercy and grace forevermore.
