My weekend
Oct. 29th, 2006 09:24 pmYesterday, the Chicago Hand Bookbinders met at the Chicago Botanic Garden to look at some of their rare books. Always a pleasure. As I had to be at a friend's further north for dinner, I decided it was silly to go back home and then come back north again, so I spent some time wandering about the Garden.
It was quite a windy day, which made the willows and ornamental grasses appear to their best advantage. Of course, I had to visit the Japanese gardens, but also walked through the Sensory garden, the Waterfall garden, Evening Island and Lakeside gardens. But one of the most interesting was the Enabling garden (despite the annoying name). It was filled with clever ideas to help people with disabilities be able to enjoy gardening. I especially liked the hanging baskets on pulleys! And then there was the Bonsai Collection. I always think of bonsai as being tiny, but that's not at all the case (though, of course, many are). I wish there were an image of my favorite, which had the roots growing over a rock.
Because it was Hallowe'en weekend, they had a special event going on for the kiddies, and there were lots of little rugrats running about in costume. They'd set up a "Friendly Trail" and a "Spooky Trail", the latter with skeletons and ghosts hanging around.
I did a bit of shopping at their gift shop, and found a book for my sister for Christmas. It's called Feast Your Eyes: the Unexpected Beuaty of Vegetable Gardens. Stacey is a great vegetable gardener, so perhaps she will be inspired.
I still had a bit of time before I needed to head to DeeJay's, so I did a bit of browsing in Loehmann's and Nordstrom Rack. I found the oddest thing at Loehmann's! There was a rather nice looking black coat with a fur collar. According the label, the coat was wool, the lining was polyester, and the collar (I swear I'm not making this up) was made of "ribbit"!!
Then on to dinner. DeeJay has acquired a second golden retriever, a rambunctious young lady named Dell. Her other golden, a male named Toby, took to Dell immediately and they are great friends. Dinner was excellent, food and company.
So it was a long, but pleasant, day.
I don't know why, but despite the fact that we got an hour back, I slept late. But still, I got a bunch of stuff done today, boring but necessary. Changing lightbulbs, ink cartridges, put in the storm door and took out the screen, worked on a book, paid bills, etc.
