Gorgeous moon yesterday! I was driving home along the lakefront shortly before 9:00 p.m., as the moon was rising. It came up out of the lake, huge and full and coppery. Absolutely stunning.
And today -- the transit of Venus! An event that will not occur again for 105 years, so I guess I'll probably miss the next one. ;-) The Adler Planetarium had set up telescopes for viewing the transit, which was visible here from 5:04 until sunset (about 7:30). I got there early, and checked out a couple of exhibits inside, and then got in one line to see sunspots and another line to see solar prominences. By then, it was almost time for the transit, so I got back into line to see that "live", and then went back in to watch the live NASA feed and hear one of the Adler people talk about the event. After browsing in the shop a bit, I went out on the adjacent viewing terrace where there was a surprisingly short line for a telescope, so I checked it out again. I wandered down to the water and strolled along the breakwater, where I found that someone had abandoned a pair of solar viewing glasses. They were a very hot commodity, having sold out at the Adler's shop very early on, so I grabbed them and viewed the transit that way, too. It was an excellent evening.
