Weekend

My best-laid plans of sleeping late this weekend went agley on Friday. I was having lunch with one of the guys at the offce. He'd been sick lately (pneumonia), and, being a guy, came back to work too soon, relapsed, and still was feeling a bit punk. When I said, "I hope you're going to have a real rest this weekend", he responded, "No, I have Bond Court." So, rolling my eyes and muttering about people who should take better care of themselves, I swapped Bond Court weekends with him. That meant I got up at my usual time instead of snuggling with the cats.

I had the last workshop of the Collecting 2.0 series Saturday. I went downtown a bit early because I wanted to see how the "Frozen Fun Fest" at Millennium Park was coping with the 50º+ weather. Here's how:
Ice maze melting
That's an ice maze melting. But people were having fun anyway!

Then I wandered down the street to The Exquisite City, a twist on the Surrealist game of Exquisite Corpse. A whole slew of artists constructed a cardboard city:
Four apartment buildings
It was pretty neat! I especially liked a piece called "Windows", silhouette dioramas done by a group of high school students.

Then I went to the workshop, which was at the home of the facilitator, who is also a private art dealer. Her place is fabulous. It's in a landmarked building, and takes up an entire floor. The story of how she got it shows her to be determined, if a bit devious! Although the apartments were originally full floor apartments, they were later broken up. She was dating a guy who had one of three apartments on the floor. They broke up, but she had always liked the place, and called the rental agent every year about it. One year, he was too busy and didn't renew the lease! She jumped on it. Later, the building converted to condos, and she bought one of the other two apartments. The person in the third apartment didn't want to sell, so Karen bought the identical apartment on the floor below and swapped. Talk about someone who gets what she wants!

Anyway, we looked at a lot of good art, Karen talked about the art market and recommended some framers and conservators.

I had planned to do dinner and a movie, but had some time, so I walked around Michigan Avenue, window shopped a bit, and then went over to Fourth Presbyterian Church, an oasis of quiet off the bustle of the street:

I took a bunch of photos of the critters carved on the fountain in the middle of the courtyard, and got my feet very muddy!

Had dinner at a Japanese restaurant, Tsuki, that I'd never been to before, but enjoyed very much, and then to Facets Cinemathèque for a showing of Tootie's Last Suit, about Tootie Montana, the chief of the Yellow Pocahontas Mardi Gras Indians. I walked into the theatre, and there was one other person there. We said, "hi", I looked at her again, and said, "Don't I know you?" We were in the same college class and I last saw her at a reunion nine years ago! We chatted, and she mentioned she'd been to Tsuki the night before for the first time! I declined joining her and a friend for a drink later, as I had to get up early again for bond court the next day, but we'll hook up another time.

More art today. The Hyde Park Art Center had several shows opening and the reception coincided with their regular Second Sunday family activity program, so the joint was jumpin'! The main show is Altogether Mutable: the work of Mary Lou Zelazny, who works in collage and is considered part of the Chicago Imagists. I went through the exhibit a couple of times, and will go back when it's less crowded. It's the kind of art that you have to look at carefully, there's so much in it:
Slumber Party, by Mary Lou Zelazny.

I also really liked the ceramics installation, Ancillary Ancestry: An ulterior genealogy, by Chris Garofalo:

Then I went home and rested up before going over to the Checkerboard to hear Tammy McCann, who was just awesome. She's classically trained, but moved into jazz. I'd have liked to stay for all three sets, but it was getting past my bedtime!
