Damn, I wish I'd had my camera with me this evening. I went to the opening of It's All in the Fold: More Than Just Origami, at the Center for Book and Paper Arts. Gorgeous stuff! I'm going back with a camera, I swear.

For some reason, I have had an urge to go to the zoo. So since tomorrow is supposed to be nice, weather-wise, I think that I will hie me to the Lincoln Park Zoo for a couple of hours, and hit the Green City Market afterwards. I have to be in Waukegan shortly after 5:00, but that's plenty of time.

Our court clerk has retired. Today was her last day at work. She's been wonderful, and I am going to miss her tremendously. Not just because she is knowledgeable and efficient and helpful, but because she makes me laugh. Sadly, our (the courtroom staff's) plans to take her to lunch didn't pan out. She lost her sister two weeks ago and had to take time off unexpectedly last week, and this week everyone else had beaten us to it. So we are trying to lure her back for a lunch. But I got her a funny gift! I was at Border's and saw a "How to do the Hula" book, with a lei and other stuff. So I bought it as a joke, and gave it to her with a card saying, "You're going to have a lot of time on your hands, so you'll need a hobby!" This to a woman who last year jumped out of a plane. (Yes, she had a parachute. Don't be silly.)

You know what they say about the best-laid plans gang aft agley? That's been my week. Wednesday, I had had in my calendar an olive oil tasting organized by Casa Italiana. I get to the place, and the woman gives me a blank look, and then says, "Oh! that's next week! They changed the date." Totally my fault. (Well, maybe not entirely.) I'd gotten the "Casa Italiana Update" email, but hadn't read it very carefully. Yes, it did say that the date was changed, but it was buried in a bunch of other info. No, I didn't notice it.

Then yesterday I was supposed to go in the afternoon to see a client at the Illinois Youth Center (a/k/a prison) in Joliet. Unlike the county jail, you can't just come by, you have to schedule the visit. So what happens? I sit in court all morning for a sentencing hearing, get behind three other hearings, and at noon the judge says, "we'll do your case at 1:30". Totally understandable, but it meant there was no way I can see my client before our court date on Monday. And the other guy (the sentencing) got penitentiary time rather than the drug treatment I was trying to get him. :-(

Today I saw a guy who's up for trial next week, trying to get some sense into him. Hard enough to do at the best of times; when you're trying to do it through an interpreter, it's more difficult. He's gotten an idea in his head that, however much I try, I cannot disabuse him of. Fortunately, the prosecutor is going to be asking for a continuance, so I will have a couple of more weeks to get him to understand that being angry at someone because you thought he was messing with your wife is not a defense to stabbing the guy in his own home. A bar fight is one thing, this is another. And the other guy using a false name is not going to help. He's showing up in court, really he is.

I'm so glad the weekend is here.

Oh! I forgot! Anyone believe in fortune cookies? The food at the opening tonight was all sort of folded. Fortune cookies, rolled cookies, kolachky, etc. So I ate a fortune cookie, and my fortune was "The current year will bring you much happiness." Later, Bill (the gallery coordinator) handed me a fortune saying, "here, this is yours", and it said, "Love is around the corner." I said, "Don't you need this one?" (He really needs a boy friend.) But then I had another fortune cookie, and it said the same thing! So we'll see. (But I'm not holding my breath.)

The exhibit sounds nice.

I'm sorry about the mess up at work. Does that happen often?

I don't know if I believe in fortune cookies, but these sound hopeful.

If you don't have too many LJ friends already, would you consider adding me to your friends list? Thanks.

The mess up at work is just one of those things. Fortunately, it's not all that common.

And, yes, I will add you to my Friends list!

How pleased I am to have time for a little catch up today.
You do have an interesting life even if it doesn't go quite the way you want it to. How frustrating some of your "clients" prove to be. Hope you further attempts to explain work well for you.

And good luck with the fortune cookie future. I'll sure be watching for developments.

you are lovable and loving ...
why shouldn't those be your fortune cookies?

I'd love for love to surprise you! It's not crucial to happiness, but it is sort of nice. :-)

Good luck with getting your client to realize that the jury does not share his mindset or cultural givens. That's tough, I know.
