mojosmom: (Venice)
Friday night, my Italian class went out to dinner. A very nice place called Luna Caprese. I had asiago-stuffed gnocchi in a tomato cream sauce, and an almond-chocolate cake for dessert. Yum. The only negative (and it's one that will likely stop me going back there) is the neighborhood. It's impossible to find street parking, and the only nearby garage is $20!!! That's more expensive that downtown Chicago.

Yesterday, I created a DVD of my Venice pictures (sometimes I amaze myself). I had done a CD, but then decided it might be fun to try out the iDVD program on my computer. So I did, added some audio to the slide show (tracks from a recording by Interpreti Veneziani of Vivaldi and friends). I'd have done more, but I didn't really have time to figure out all the goodies in the program. But now that I've tried it once, I expect I'll do so again!

We were having a gathering of the Venice tour group (and a couple of spouses who hadn't gone) to share pictures and generally gab and have a good time, which was why I did the DVD. Nearly everyone came, which was nice. It was good to see them again. Then we went down the street for dinner at Côtes du Rhône. There were twenty of us, and the restaurant took it in stride. The occasional delay is only to be expected with a group that size, but the service was generally prompt, and friendly and attentive. The food was excellent! Classic French bistro cooking (I had a duck breast that was perfectly done). It's BYOB, and we did.

I'm off to the opera this afternoon, the first of the Chicago Opera Theatre's season, Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, by Monteverdi.

Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria was wonderful! (But then, I'm a Monteverdi fan.) Tiny, tiny orchestra (a couple of harpsichords, a couple of theorbi, a gamba, a few violins and violas, etc.). It's very interesting, because there are no extant orchestral scores, just voice parts. So it's all guesswork, based on what's known of other contemporary secular performance work, theatre size and economics, etc. The stage design was minimalist, but done by the architect, Rafael Viñoly. The pit was Ulysses' ship! I liked it.

Came home and had leftover fennel sausage for dinner.
