How could I go to work when [livejournal.com profile] skyring was in town? He and [livejournal.com profile] tzurriz showed up at my place around 10:00 a.m. We headed over to the Museum of Science and Industry to see the U-505 exhibit, and browsed a bit around the rest of the museum before heading over to the Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop to introduce Pete to Cajun cooking. We split orders of breaded oysters and fried green tomatoes, and Pete had a "Southern sampler" (gumbo, jambalaya and red beans & rice). I think he liked it! The best part, though, was when our waitress recognized Pete's Australian accent and commented on it. She told us that her daughter's class had been studying other countries, and that her daughter's project was Australia! They had found a website through which they had ordered some Australian goodies, including (wait for it!) Tim-Tams! She described them as "better than Girl Scout cookies". So Pete explained Tim-Tam Slams, gave her an Australian $5 note for her daughter, and we had a lovely chat.

Next, a stop at the Museum campus (home to the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium) to show Pete the best view of the city (here he is on the lakefront)and then on to do a bit of shopping. Pete wanted to get a gift for his daughter for her 21st birthday. We first took him to the Jewelers' Mall, but that wasn't quite what he wanted. Rebecca and I asked him to tell us about his daughter, and, after he described what she was like, we hauled him over to the Art Institute, which has a great museum shop. We saw a gorgeous Judith Jack bracelet, and Rebecca modeled it, but we had a hard time removing it and as the saleswoman helped, the clasp broke! Needless to say, that was not purchased. But a lovely necklace and brooch were.

Despite Rebecca's desperate attempts to dissuade him, Pete wanted to see some of the art (what? at an art museum? silly man!), so we checked out the American Art galleries. Not only did Pete and I enjoy it, but Rebecca did as well, and I am going to drag her back.

Then off to North Michigan Avenue for drinks at the Signature Lounge on the 96th floor of the John Hancock Building. Great view, although Pete couldn't see the best view as that is the view from the ladies' room (the men's room is alleged to have no windows whatsoever - I can't vouch for that). Obviously, many pictures were taken along the way.

Dinner at one of [livejournal.com profile] tzurriz' favorite restaurants, Bistro 110. I admit it, we pigged. They give you a lovely roasted head of garlic for your bread, and the rest of the food was yummy, too. Both Pete and Rebecca took doggie bags home, and nobody had room for dessert.

Such a lovely day! I'm so glad Pete stopped in Chicago on his way to Charleston, especially as I can't get to the convention myself. He'd better come back and spend more time, and he'd better bring Kerri with him!
