A miscellany

"Snow buries area" says the Trib website. Fortunately, not near me. We got mostly rain in the city, though there was some snow on the car this morning. The majority of the stuff went to the northwest 'burbs.
Well, now, here's a bright idea: Man charged after gun hidden in oven goes off, injuring 2 boys. Fortunately, the kids are going to be okay, but why is it always the wrong person who is hurt as a result of this kind of idiocy?
Oddity learned while listening to NPR: when astronauts return from space, they have to fill out travel vouchers. (Well, it's the federal bureaucracy, so maybe not so odd!) "Housing: provided; meals: provided."
Grocery stores that give out free samples (they had a chocolate fountain, for cryin' out loud!) are not helpful to people watching their weight. Particularly when the Homemade Pizza store next door is having a "tasting party". And then you go to a housewares store and they have samples of pear-mango marmalade (excellent, by the way)!
People who park their U-Hauls at the end of an alley so no one can get in or out are really annoying. Yes, I can go around the block to the other side, but I shouldn't have to. Hello, 9-1-1? (That's another oddity. Granted, it's annoying, but it's not exactly an emergency. Nevetheless, we're supposed to call 9-1-1, not 3-1-1.)
One of the curious things about the LJ "strike" is that I have very little idea of who on my Friends list actually stopped posting because of it. After the second or third lengthy "cut-and-pasted" screed, I just blew right past them and didn't even bother to look to see whose post it was. For all I knew, most people were just off observing the holiday.
