I have been having a godawful time with my phone service lately. Half the time when I pick up the phone, there's no dial tone. Dealing with my phone company is making me crazy. First I sit on hold for ages (on my cell phone, natch), then they tell me it's fixed, but it isn't. Then they finally bump me up to the "next level", and a tech is supposed to come to my house. Nobody shows. Why? Because "they checked the line and it's okay". No, it's not. Why didn't you ask
me?? I may fire these people. However, I'm giving them one last chance. I went on their website, found the name and email of the "Executive Vice President and President, Access and Voice", and gave him a piece of my mind. I now have the name and direct extension of a woman in Executive Relations. We'll see.
So that was my Saturday. Lots of aggravation and time wasted trying to deal with that mess. However, yesterday the weather was lovely, and I also accomplished a lot. I
finally finished the project I was working on and today I went to the post office and sent it off to the giftees. Then I decided to go to the Checkerboard Lounge for a jazz break. The Checkerboard is an historic Chicago club, though no longer in their original location. They got gentrified out of Bronzeville (and they have a crappy alderman where they were, who was
useless), and are now in Hyde Park. Six nights a week, it's blues, but on the seventh, the Hyde Park Jazz Society presents an evening of jazz. Last night it was vocalist Dee Alexander, who I really like. I stayed for two sets, but not the third, since I did have to work today! (I really think they should have closed the courthouse on account of
good weather, but they didn't.) She was great, and announced that she's been asked to do a concert at Millennium Park on July 19th, a tribute to Dinah (Washington) and Nina (Simone). I've marked
my calendar!
Last Sunday, I went to a very interesting program at the
Spertus Institute, on Images of Jewish Women in the Media, with a couple of board members from Hadassah's
MorningStar Commission. (Yes, it is named after Wouk's
Marjorie Morningstar.) This is a bunch of very high-powered women in (mostly) L.A. and New York, like the head of ABC's Standards Division. Another upcoming program at Spertus is going to feature Judy Chicago's biographer, talking about Judy's
Holocaust Project. I think I'll try to get to that one, too.
Friday's board meeting was at the offices of the agency I used to work for, and I ran into several old friends. Eddie is in a play now at the Goodman, so I have to check that out!
