Helen Sclair, known to everyone as "The Cemetery Lady", is now resting in a place she knew very well. She was also a fixture at the Newberry Library Book Sale's Chicago & Collectibles Room. Here's an appreciation from the Book Fair Blogger and an obit from the Chicago Tribune.

I went to Jim & Kevin's holiday party Saturday night and had a wonderful time, as usual. Our friend Jamie didn't come, as he is in the Antipodes, enjoying summer. I ate a bit too much, as usual, but limited myself to two glasses of wine. But I really need to watch it, as the pounds are creeping up. It's hard to behave in that department this time of year! I met the architect who did the apartment when the guys moved there several years ago. It was a gut rehab, and he did an amazing job! It was nice to be able to praise him to his face. he's an artist.

Well, this was fun! Sometimes, you need a push to make you sit down and just read. Because I often have multiple books going, it's not unusual for me to have some lying around that are just thiiissss close to being finished. So I finished three yesterday, and read four others. It was a very pleasant way to spend the day.

I wish I'd known about the Do Nothing But Read day - I'd love to do that! I might choose another day to do it. You look so cosy in those pics, with your socks and your cat and your tea! You must read incredibly fast to finish all those books in one day.

Well, not really that fast. As I say, three I'd almost finished, one was a graphic novel and one was mostly illustrations. Diana Vreeland's book was a very quick read. I think it was actually edited from conversations, and it felt very much as though I were simply listening to her rapid-fire speech on paper, if that makes sense. And the other fashion book, The Classic Ten, was also an easy read. I didn't take on anything lengthy or heavy.

Really liked Richard Gobbons "Water Dance". He seems quite versatile.
What an achievement to finish all those books even if some were already partway through.
What comfy looking sox you have.

Wish I'd known. I didn't until day's end, but having said that I did have a delightful day Sunday, so next year I must plan ahead - although, to be fair, I had not a few days like this when my wrist was broken :=) They were so wonderful I squirm at the memory!
